Media has become our surrogate best friend. Your cell phone is your girlfriend or boyfriend with whom you have a long distance relationship. Your Facebook is your new best friend you met while you studied abroad. Your Twitter is your radio shout-out to whoever you want, whenever you want. Your LinkedIn is your own personal assistant who is always armed with endless copies of your resumes and references 24/7. And I love it. We love it. Our society thrives on new technology, befriends it, and learns how to best reap the benefits of such a relationship. Media offers our society unique opportunities from maintaining long term relationships and networking to learning of events within minutes of their happening. What would your friend do if they dropped their phone in water or you if your computer picked up a virus… and then they both stopped functioning? How would you react? Media has become an integral part of our society and both a physical and emotional extension of ourselves. Unintentionally, we form relationships with our technology (which Dane Cook jokes about in the clip above) and feed off the feelings of adrenaline, fear, and control. Will they text me back? Dude, I can own this game. Media is the new roller coaster, and no one wants to get off!
